good morning my name is Desmond Blackburn I'm Deputy Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education it's a pleasure it's an honor to be here this morning to celebrate the gold seal of American Education to celebrate the Super Bowl winner the Academy Award winner the Grammy Award of making a difference in the lives of children communities and families congratulations this time amazing leader first staff and amazing children families that made this happen it just a great day for this school that proves what can be done on people come together and commit for the babies I'm at Lisa Brown principal at p.s. 249 I've been at the Caton school for 22 years one of my gifts to see the positive in others you can't look at the glass empty you have to find strength in people and use the strength to create a Blue Ribbon School the front came in here around the year 2000 ad that time I was teaching for we were actually in the gym and we were having a luncheon and when I saw her walk in I just said to myself that she has a big job to do here because there were a lot of things that were Happening Here in the building the collaborative switches in work as a team. There was a lot of racial tensions in the building and the school is slowly going downhill as far as academic that we could achieve such a feat but it has happened and no one has happened I'm not very surprised because I know the work that goes into it which was never mentioned that the school is going to put you in on a water anything with this. It was just here towards building the students giving them what is required and in the process of doing that the award game I came in here and I used the staff I started to build leaders which is something that I've always done to work collaboratively to get people on board to get them trust me and understand that we're all in here to serve children and their families you cannot come into this profession day in and day out and not love the children and want to see a bed beautiful. I want to make a better future for them and the way that we as Educators make a better future for our kids is by being what they need loving them being present for them being an ear to listen to a shoulder to cry on you have to love the children to do this work as soon as Miss Brown came into the building she started to bring professional development there was no professional development that existed at all before Miss Brown came I remember I'm spending a lot of knife here at and it was all the teachers coming together Miss Brown is at his tools Miss coffee who was our coach at that time we were all just learning the curriculum together opening the books reading the lessons what is it doesn't sound like what are the charts were going to need to create what are the books we need to buy and everyone just had that Hands-On approach special we could be who we want to be and we're not treated differently because of that and I know that if some other school as people want you to be. like that they don't want you to be yourself so it feels really good to be treated and how I wanted to be treated as they love the teachers here at the teachers are very caring they do anything and every to make a positive environment for kids I am super proud of our community and I'm super proud that I have the staff that I have because it takes an army to give each kid what they need when they need it and that's what Equity really is I know that the children can make it if they have supporting adults behind them and I'm not just talk about Huntsville I'm talking about every single adult community I would say I share my leadership because I feel comfortable and no that I have teachers that could run the show I have kids that can run this show and the parents definitely help out my PTA president she's definitely a valuable Miss Tina the education could get here is unparalleled particularly for a public school for Brooklyn it's just it's unbelievable and that's why I tell parents if you put your kid in the school they will walk out of here with a stellar education and they will feel like they had help and support throughout the entire process of taking care of not just their kids these kids rain but their hearts and their souls and their personalities and their joy we have something that each child can be a part of between the Arts programs that I can see Santa Claus the optical opportunities we invest so much into them and this is a community of Love tool to shows love from the minute you walk in to the minute you leave we still have students at come back 10 years later to see if there's is there still here I would want my own child my nieces and nephews to be in the school when they're old enough approach to education by the school and it's really like an American Dream and American dream that turns into a Blue Ribbon School the Terra Bella Ford is giving too I believe they selected eight principles from all over the United States Miss Brown was the only principal to get it from New York City and New York state which is such an high honor this award is just recognizing top notch principal principal is that are making changes principal that are making things happen and principles that are just excellent skill tree High School not locked like a robot I think she really deserves this award because she works so hard to make all this teacher understand each child she's helpful kind and she goes around to make sure everybody's okay and say good morning to you. Bye every single. I'm not sure we aren't seen by school materials for us because she really cares about us and how we're doing the brown incredible she is a Visionary when you first sat down with her you get the sense that she is a woman with a perfect she's been doing it for a long time and see is ultra successful get someone definitely to apply for do you like it more than Principal Brown she is courageous she's an advocate for our students you always fight to was right she is loving she is kind she is a gracious leader I think that above all its Principal Brown commitment to finding the strength in every single person every grown up in the school and every child in the school and then saying to each and every person you know you need to be all in and to bring everything that you've got to to this school I think my legacy is that this leadership and whether I'm here or whether I'm not here to school will carry on the legacy of learning as long as you have a staff that scaring that loves kids this great things in store for PS 249 because everyone is working collaboratively to be the best that they can be it's a win for all thank you that was an amazing speech and it was really memorable
